Career fair season is upon us yet again and you are thinking to yourself, “I have one semester left to find a job/internship; it’s crunch time!” But how do you effectively navigate your way through the overwhelming and intimidating environment of your campus career fair? I’m here to tell you that it’s not as hard as it may seem. Of course you want to prepare to make a memorable impression on your potential future employers, but you also have to be yourself and find the job that fits YOU!
Step #1: Figure out who you are
Ask yourself, “Who am I?” It may be one of the hardest questions to answer, however it’s an important one. Too few people take the time to actually identify their interests, values, skills and personality traits and relate that to a career. Some questions you might want to ask yourself:
- What activities do I enjoy?
- What am I passionate about?
- What have I liked/disliked about past jobs/clubs/organizations I’ve been a part of?
- What type of work environment do I want (corporate, outdoors, retail, classroom, hospital…)?
