“I AM FROM THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA SO I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN INTERESTED IN TECH COMPANIES SINCE WATCHING THE TECH BOOM AS A CHILD.”
by Natasha Harvey
WHERE IS YOUR INTERNSHIP FOR THE SUMMER? Splunk Inc.
HOW DID YOU FIND THE INTERNSHIP? Through LinkedIn.
DID YOU NETWORK WITH OTHER COMPANIES IN THE AREA? DID YOU HAVE INFORMATIONAL INTERVIEWS EARLY IN YOUR COLLEGE CAREER TO START MAKING CONNECTIONS IN THIS AREA?
I did network with other companies in the area. However, I could rarely find a company looking for interns in San Francisco at the IU career fairs because they were mostly recruiting for their Midwest offices. However, I found larger companies such as Oracle and Salesforce who connected me with recruiters for their SF offices. As for Splunk, I was able to apply to the internship via their LinkedIn job posting and then I reached out to the company through the email and phone number found on their website. They enjoyed the initiative I showed by contacting them through multiple outlets and that helped me land the internship.
DO YOU HAVE ANY HELPFUL HINTS TO SHARE WITH OTHER STUDENTS?
I would say to make sure that you are on top of getting back to people and reaching out to people as early as possible. For me, a lot of marketing internships didn’t open their applications until the spring but I reached out to the companies in the fall to say I was interested so they were thinking about me before the applications were even released. It doesn’t take long to edit your cover letter for a new application and it will help immensely in the long run!
