Student Newsletter – RECRUITING: BEFORE & AFTER FALL BREAK

October 4, 2021

Taking place TODAY on Handshake is the HIRE BIG 10+ & MWACE DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION VIRTUAL CAREER FAIR. Everyone is welcome at this event where employers will promote their open positions while showcasing their commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion through hiring practices, workplace culture, and diversity-focused initiatives and programs.

Also, don’t miss the last Kelley Virtual Employer Networking Night (ENN) for fall semester next Tuesday, Oct. 12.

BEING READY FOR IN-PERSON RECRUITING INTERACTIONS

Some in-person interviews are taking place at the Prebys Center. The UCS team has communicated to recruiters that wearing a mask is required while indoors on campus. If you encounter a scenario where an employer you are interviewing with is not wearing a mask, it is ok to remind them about IU’s mask mandate while in any university building.

With more and more in-person interactions, it is also a good reminder to be prepared with a plan when someone extends their hand for a handshake. Be prepared with an alternative greeting!

VIRTUAL INTERVIEW – KELLEY ZOOM BACKGROUNDS

On the other hand, if you have a virtual interview coming up and want to use a Kelley background, you are welcome to download one for use here.

HANDSHAKE SEARCH TIPS

There are thousands of internship and full-time opportunities posted on Handshake. Here are a few quick tips for using the platform to find opportunities that align with what you are looking for:

  • If you are interested in a specific company, selecting to “follow” that employer will help keep you in the loop on new opportunities they post and new events in which they are participating.
  • Use some of the search filters such as job type, job role, and industry.
  • You can enter in a specific city using the location filter. It is important, however, to keep in mind, that doing so WILL NOT INCLUDE opportunities if a company has indicated “Nationwide”, “Multiple Locations”, a Suburb name, “Virtual”, or any word other than the specific city, as the location.
  • In general, remember a search is very literal. The system is not going to make assumptions. It will return EXACTLY what it’s asked to return, so run a lot of different searches.

 INTERVIEW PREPARATION TIPS

If you’ve got an interview coming up, use some of these resources available to help you prepare!

IMPORTANT CAREER FAIR & ENN REMINDERS:

  • Participation is a 2-step process: (1) Register on Handshake for each event AND (2) Sign up for group sessions and 1:1 sessions with your firms of interest before they fill up. Solely registering does NOT get you in front of employers!
  • To sign up for Group or 1:1 sessions, your profile privacy must be set to “Community”.
  • You can check back 48 hours prior to the event for additional 1:1 sessions that have opened.
  • Virtual does not mean optional! Several employers have shared that some students who have scheduled time with them have been no-shows. Ghosting an employer does not bode well for future employment opportunities. If you schedule a time to meet with an employer, SHOW UP and log in on time! The employers know who is on their schedule and will document and remember a no show.
  • Technical difficulty or day-of-event questions? We will be available by clicking “Join Virtual Help Room” in Handshake during the event.

CAN EMPLOYERS FIND YOU IN OUR RESUME BOOKS?

Uploading your resume to Handshake does not automatically include you in the resume books – you have to follow these steps.  A resume book is a digital compilation of students’ resumes, by major and graduation year, that the UCS makes available for hiring employers at their request. This helps us promote you to companies! Employers request resumes of students who are in the job market, so maximize your visibility to companies and upload your resume today!

IU MAURER DIRECT ADMIT APPLICATIONS – STILL OPEN FOR FALL 2022
