Student Newsletter – LAST ENN THIS SEMESTER, THIS THURSDAY, 2/24

February 22, 2022

There is one more Kelley ENN this semester. This is scheduled at the Prebys Career Center. Please note: Student attendance will be limited to 200 for this in-person ENN. Make sure to register before it is full! Participating companies are listed and registration is open on Handshake.

GETTING READY FOR AN IN-PERSON EVENT

Preparation for an in-person event isn’t drastically different from what you would do to prepare for a virtual event. You still need to:

  • Do research: What companies are attending? What are the company’s products or services? What are the positions for which they are hiring? What are the skills required in those roles?
  • Have a plan: Which companies are at the top of your priority list? What company will you visit first, second, third, etc?
  • Outline talking points: How will you introduce yourself? (Name, year in school, major, and what type of role you are seeking are good starters). What are your key skills and experiences that are most relevant to the position that you want to highlight and weave into the conversation?
  • Aim to make the interaction conversational: What questions will you ask the employer to engage them in a dialogue?

CALLING ALL INTROVERTS!

Do you consider yourself an introvert? Are you nervous about attending the in-person ENN this week? You are not alone! Take a deep breath and read on for 6 IRL Networking Tips for Introverts.

TO SHAKE OR NOT TO SHAKE?

PROCRASTINATION – “I’LL START MY JOB SEARCH NEXT WEEK”

Getting started is often the hardest part of anything challenging.  It’s human nature to put off things that require effort and specifically, sustained effort.  When things seem daunting, or scary or push us into a behavior or action in which we’re not confident, our mind tells us, “I can work on this easy thing that I’m good at first. I’ll work on that hard thing later.”  Breaking into career search mode engages all kinds of visceral emotional responses, the first of which is typically procrastination.  If you haven’t started a job search or don’t know where to start, make an appointment to see one of the Professional Career Coaches at the Prebys Center. We can help break down the path ahead into digestible steps and be a guidepost for accountability.  Sometimes all it takes is someone asking, “what did you do this week for your search?” to get the gears turning and get you headed in the right direction.  We’re here to help! Come see us.
