Student Newsletter – 3 THINGS YOU CAN DO BEFORE YOU LEAVE FOR SPRING BREAK

March 1, 2022

Spring break is just around the corner! If you are seeking a summer internship or full-time employment, here are 3 quick things you can do in the next 2 weeks to move your search forward before and during the break.

  • Use the filters under the Handshake “Jobs” tab to find 10-15 internships/jobs of interest.
  • Submit your resume and follow each company’s instructions to apply.
  • Using Handshake, LinkedIn, family, friends, and classmates as resources, identify 5-7 people (former interns, current employees, Kelley alums, etc.) and reach out to set up an informational interview to learn more about the company and/or opportunity.

More importantly, ENJOY your well-deserved spring break and take the downtime to reflect and strategize your next steps for recruiting post-spring break!

Questions? Set up an appointment via Handshake to meet with a UCS Career Coach.

PROCRASTINATION – “I’LL START MY JOB SEARCH NEXT WEEK”

Getting started is often the hardest part of anything challenging.  It’s human nature to put off things that require effort and specifically, sustained effort.  When things seem daunting, or scary or push us into a behavior or action in which we’re not confident, our mind tells us, “I can work on this easy thing that I’m good at first. I’ll work on that hard thing later.”  Breaking into career search mode engages all kinds of visceral emotional responses, the first of which is typically procrastination.  If you haven’t started a job search or don’t know where to start, make an appointment to see one of the Professional Career Coaches at the Prebys Center. We can help break down the path ahead into digestible steps and be a guidepost for accountability.  Sometimes all it takes is someone asking, “what did you do this week for your search?” to get the gears turning and get you headed in the right direction.  We’re here to help! Come see us.

Join us this Friday, Mar. 4 from 12-1pm to learn about planning now for the summer after sophomore year (hint: a formal internship is not required). We will also discuss tips for how to get the most out of using the UCS and other useful information for solidifying your major and career exploration.

This is an in-person session in our Prebys Career Center. Masks are optional at IU in indoor spaces starting March 4. Please determine your comfort level and feel free to wear a mask. Dress is casual and students are welcome to come and go as their schedule permits.

NAVIGATE INTERNATIONAL HIRING IN THE U.S.

If you are an international student interested in working in the U.S. after graduation, this virtual session is for you! On March 4, from 10-11:30am, the IU Career Services Council International Committee is hosting a virtual presentation with IU’s Immigration Bridge legal partner. Nancy Nemeth, an attorney with Fragomen, Del Rey, Bernsen and Loewy (voted the 2022 Law Firm of the Year in Immigration Law) will be presenting on paths to legal employment in the U.S.  She will briefly cover CPT & OPT, and then focus on H-1B and other employment visas. There will be plenty of time for your individual questions afterwards. You can submit your questions in advance through your Zoom registration or ask them in real time.

ROOMS AVAILABLE AT THE PREBYS CAREER CENTER
