HAVE A GREAT SPRING BREAK!

Spring break is just around the corner! If you are seeking a summer internship or full-time employment, here are 3 quick things you can do this week to move your search forward before and during the break.

  • Use the filters under the Handshake “Jobs” tab to find 10 internships/jobs of interest.
  • Submit your resume and follow each company’s instructions to apply.
  • Using Handshake, LinkedIn, family, friends, and classmates as resources, identify 5-7 people (former interns, current employees, Kelley alums, etc.) and reach out to set up an informational interview for when you return after the break to learn more about the company and/or opportunity.

More importantly, ENJOY your well-deserved break and take the downtime to reflect and strategize your next steps for recruiting post-spring break!

Questions? Set up an appointment via Handshake to meet with a UCS Career Coach.

UCS SPRING BREAK HOURS

The Prebys Career Center will be closed the week of March 14-18. Limited career coaching will be available virtually and by appointment only and can be made via Handshake.

FINDING JOB SHADOW OPPORTUNITIES

Several companies have posted job shadow opportunities in Handshake. Job Shadows are categorized under “Experiential Learning” in Handshake and are great opportunities to learn more about a day in the life at a particular company or what it’s like to work in a specific role. To find these opportunities, click on the Handshake “Jobs” tab, then “All filters” > “+More” > Experiential Learning.

HOW TO MAKE NETWORKING FEEL LESS AWKWARD

School breaks often give you the opportunity to break out of your normal routine and meet new people. How do you make networking feel less awkward? Read this tip from the Harvard Business Review – Management Tip of the Day (from 2/24/2022):

“If networking feels transactional – and even unnatural – to you, you’re not alone. Maybe you take a bit longer to open up to people. Maybe your mind goes blank when you’re trying to make a good impression. Or maybe you feel the need to overcompensate for your nerves with false enthusiasm.

How can you reconcile the fact that you should be networking with your equally strong desire to avoid the discomfort of it all? Start by reframing how you think about it. Try thinking of it as a genuine opportunity to make a meaningful connection, rather than a phony, opportunistic interaction. Consider what you have to offer in a situation, not just what you want to take. For example, when you ask someone for career advice or support, you are actually giving them an opportunity to help you – – that’s what many people want to do. Explore your authentic curiosity.

Before meeting someone new, read a little about them, but do so with the goal of finding something interesting, rather than memorizing the ‘right’ questions to ask in order to make a good impression. It’s a subtle mindset shift, but it can make a world of difference. Finally, don’t try to hide who you are. Be honest – – even if that means openly expressing discomfort with the whole networking thing.” (Adapted from “The Awkward Person’s Guide to Networking” by Alyssa F. Westring)
