Real Estate

Real Estate knowledge is helpful whether you use it to make a residential or commercial property purchase, or for investment purposes. The Kelley Real Estate major is a finance–based program that requires excellent financial analytical skills. There is nearly a 100% placement with this major.

Consider a Co-Major to gain additional skills in a specialized area.  Kelley Co-Majors include:

  • Business Analytics
  • International Business
  • Law, Ethics and Decision-Making (LEAD)
  • Sustainable Business
  • Technology Management
  • Digital and Social Media Business Applications

Commercial Real Estate Analyst

Utilizes technology to evaluate properties and markets to make solid real estate decisions. Solid background in financial analysis and critical thinking skills to make good business decisions.

Real Estate Consulting

Performs analysis, market research, feasibility studies, and economic consulting, strategic planning and project management, and property use restrictions (legal). Good speaking, writing and interpersonal skills to be able to clearly communicate with a various types of people. Strong financial analysis skills are important.

Real Estate Entrepreneur or Investor

Analyzes market values, purchases properties, makes repairs or improvements and resells properties for a financial gain. RE investment requires excellent analytical skills and an understanding of market values, along with cash flow, capital appreciation, depreciation, tax benefits, and zoning regulations.

Real Estate Broker

Obtaining a state broker license and may open own company (broker) or may affiliate with an established broker firm (become a salesperson/broker associate) to market and sell properties.

Real Estate Appraiser

Analyze and estimate the value of land and the buildings on the land before it is sold, mortgaged, taxed, insured, or developed, and requires certification (licensing varies by state).

Property Manager / Leasing Agent

Analyzes and establishes local rental rates, calculates overhead costs, depreciation, taxes, and profit goals. The PM contracts with tenants and collects the rent monies, maintains property by investigating and resolving disputes, maintains building, supervises repairs, and enforces policies. This requires excellent communication, persuasion, and negotiating skills, along with technical repair knowledge, and requires certification. A leasing agent conducts activities to lease residential or commercial property, typically apartments or offices. Requirements include excellent communication skills to interact with potential clients and listen to their needs, and conducting tours of properties the client might be interested in leasing.
